Adjectives: a nice new house, you look tired
Sometimes we use two or more adjectives together: • My brother lives in a nice new house. • In the kitchen there was a beautiful large round wooden table. Adjectives like new/large/round/wooden are fact adjectives. They give us řactual information a bout age, size, colour ete. Adjectives like nice/beautiful are opinion adjecrives. They tell us what somebody thinks oř s omething or somebody. O pinion adjectives usually go beřore řact adjectives.

Adjectives oř size and length (big/small/tall/short/long ete.) usually go beřore adjectives oř shape a nd width (round/řat/thin/slim/wide ete): a large round table a tall thin girl a long narrow street W hen there are two or more colour adjecrives, we use and: a black and white dress a red, white and green flag T his does not usually happen with other adjectives before a noun: a l ong black dress [not a l ong and black dress) We use adjectives after be/get/become/seem: • Be careful! • P m tired and Pm getting hungry. • As the film went on, it became more and more boring. • Y our řriend seems very nice. We also use adjectives to say how somebody/something looks, řeels. sounds. tastes or smells: • Y ou look tired. /1 feel tired. / She sounds tired. • T he dinner smells good. Z T his tea tastes a bit strange. But to say how s omebody does something you must use an adverb (see Units 100-101): • D rive carefully! [not D rive careřul) • S usan plays the piano very well. (not p lays ... very good) We say 'the first two days / the next řew weeks / the last ten minutes' ete. : • I d idn't enjoy the first two days oř the course. (not the rwo first days) • They'11 be away řor the next řew weeks. (not the řew next weeks)
