Understand Grading and Authentication Services
eBay offers buyers (and sellers) a list of independent companies that help you determine if an item is in good condition and is what the seller says it is. This can increase your confidence that you are not being defrauded. You, as a buyer, pay a small fee to have the item investigated. You may want to have the item graded or authenticated. You can buy these services for stamps, trading cards, sports autographs and memorabilia, comics, coins, books, Beanie Babies, or jewelry, among other things. eBay, of course, does not guarantee that these services are valid, but they do represent that the companies listed are valid businesses that perform these services.

Find a Grading Service
When you ask someone to grade an item, you ask him or her to comment on its condition—what grade is a specific coin, for instance? Is it mint condition? Good? Poor? The grading system depends on what item is being graded, so coins would differ from antique furniture, for example. To find a grading service:

Click My eBay on the eBay header. Scroll down the My eBay Views sidebar to Related Links. Click Buying Resources.

Under Services, click Item Authentication. On the Using Authentication And Grading Services, scroll down and click View A List Of Companies. A screen is displayed similar to that shown in Figure 3-11.

Scroll down, look for grading services, and click the company you are interested in.
